Esher Area Guide

The town provides the perfect balance between country and city living, with a wealth of scenic countryside on the doorstep and the outstanding shopping, dining and entertainment of London only a short train journey away.

With its proximity to the capital, Esher holds enduring appeal for the commuter and those looking to escape the hectic pace of London life.

Esher fact file

  • Originally a Saxon settlement, Esher appears in the Domesday Book of 1086.
  • Transport links have always been key to its prosperity, firstly as a stagecoach stop on the London–Portsmouth road in the 17th century and later with the advent of the railway in 1838.
  • Esher has connections to the British music scene, with both George Harrison of the Beatles and Maurice Gibb of the Bee Gees calling the town home during their respective heydays in the 1960s and 70s.
  • The Esher Place estate originally sprang up in Tudor times and was at one point occupied by the infamous Cardinal Wolsey, who no doubt benefitted from its proximity to Hampton Court.
  • The 18th century grade II listed Claremont House is a former royal residence and now school, with beautiful grounds maintained by the National Trust.
  • Hampton Court Palace is very near by to the area, with its rich history and manicured gardens.

Architecture and property

Esher offers a selection of detached 1930s homes located around the station area of Ember Lane, along with many private roads offering a mix of opulent homes. Each of the surrounding towns and villages offers something unique, from the art deco style family homes of Claygate and Hinchley Wood to smaller post-war houses and terraces in East and West Molesey to the period properties of Thames Ditton. Cobham and Oxshott have some of the most exclusive private estate in Surrey, offering a range of homes from listed manors to palatial mansions.

The Esher Palace Eatate has been rebuilt several times, with the most recent incarnation dating back mostly to the late 19th century, although the original 15th century gatehouse of Waynflete's Tower remains.

Shopping and amenities

There are several Waitrose supermarkets in the area, as well as a Tesco in nearby Hersham and a Co-op in Thames Ditton. Further local amenities include a public library, post office, several pharmacies, and a choice of doctor, dentist and veterinary surgeries.

Going out

There is an Everyman cinema local and Hampton Court Palace and Epsom Downs Racecourse.

Green space

Esher boasts ample green space, notably Sandown Park with its renowned racecourse and golf centre, which offers three 9-hole courses. Residents of Esher can enjoy pleasant walks along the River Mole or through the National Trust landscaped gardens at Claremont. The Surrey Hills Area of Natural Beauty and the North Downs are both a short drive away for more extensive walking and cycling routes.

What does our local Hamptons community think

We have just sold our house through Hamptons Esher. Paul Brown and his team were extremely helpful and responsive throughout the process, and with their help we were able to secure a satisfactory offer in a matter of just a few weeks from going to market, which was key in order to secure our onward purchase. I would highly recommend Paul and Hamptons Esher, the combination of local knowledge, access to London buyers and their pro-active approach made all the difference.

Simon Read July 2024

Paul and Victoria were fantastic with the sale of my property. Professional, helpful and understanding. Can't recommend them highly enough.

Susannah Horwood July 2024

Highly recommend the team at Esher. Victoria was very knowledgeable and knew exactly what I was looking for!
